Italian Surgeons Perform Life-Saving Heart Operations for Children in Slemani

Slemani, Iraq – – As part of ongoing efforts to improve pediatric health services in the Kurdistan Region, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC), in partnership with the Charity Organization of the Qaiwan Group and Anwar Sheikha Medical City, successfully hosted a team of specialized pediatric cardiac surgeons from Italy. The mission, carried out between April 5-13, 2025, focused on diagnosing and treating children suffering from congenital heart defects.

The Italian team—comprised of nine highly skilled professionals, including pediatric cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, ICU doctors, nurses and a perfusionist—visited Anwar Sheikha Medical City in Slemani on April 6. During the initial assessments, led by Dr. Aso Faiaq (Pediatric Cardiologist) and Dr. Diyar Shirwan (Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon), 27 children were evaluated for potential surgical intervention.

Following evaluations, eight surgeries were scheduled. Over the course of the mission, six complex pediatric heart surgeries were successfully performed at Anwar Sheikha Medical City. The young patients—ranging in weight from 10 and 13 kilograms—have shown encouraging signs of recovery. Among the cases was a particularly rare and delicate surgery involving a child born with their heart outside the chest cavity, which was completed successfully.

Beyond the operating room, the visiting team met with Sara Rashid, President of Kurdistan Save the Children, to discuss future collaboration. Discussions centered on ongoing coordination, planning for future surgical missions and supporting the launch of the new Children’s Heart Center in Slemani. Both sides explored ways the team could contribute to the development and success of the center—ensuring more children across the region can access life-saving care.

This visit is part of an ongoing collaboration between KSC and international medical teams, aiming at strengthening pediatric cardiac care in the region. With the recent establishment of the Children’s Heart Hospital in Slemani, partnerships with international pediatric cardiologists—particularly from Italy—have deepened, paving the way for sustainable, life-saving care for children with heart conditions.

Slemani, Iraq – In a heartfelt effort to support vulnerable families during the holy month of Ramadan and Eid, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) successfully distributed essential aid, made possible by the generosity of individuals and businesses. This initiative provided families and children in need, including IDP, refugee, and host communities, with food packages containing rice, flour, sugar and other essentials, as well as financial assistance, new clothing for Eid and portions of protein like fresh meat—ensuring they could celebrate this sacred time with dignity and comfort.

“This Ramadan, our mission was not just to provide food and clothing but to foster a sense of hope, community and solidarity,” said Sara Rashid, KSC President. “Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to touch the lives of countless families, reminding them that they are not alone.”

She added, “For years, KSC has been actively supporting families in need during Ramadan by providing food packages and clothing, enabling them to fully participate in both Ramadan and Eid celebrations. This year, the generosity of our community exceeded our expectations and those of previous years, allowing us to reach many more families. Giving is deeply rooted in the spirit of Ramadan, and the trust our community places in NGOs like KSC is a positive step forward—allowing us to use our expertise to ensure donations reach the families who need them most.”

Thanks to the outpouring of support from our donors, KSC provided:

2,068 food packages, including:

On World Health Day, KSC Highlights Progress in Children’s Health Initiatives Across Iraq

Slemani – On the occasion of World Health Day, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) proudly underscores its ongoing efforts to ensure the health and well-being of children across the Kurdistan Region and the rest of Iraq through its comprehensive and inclusive Health Program. Rooted in the fundamental belief that every child has the right to a healthy life, KSC remains at the forefront of delivering life-saving healthcare to the most vulnerable.

KSC’s Health Program is designed to provide equitable access to critical medical services for children, particularly those battling severe illnesses and living in economically disadvantaged circumstances. Through strategic collaboration with local health institutions and international partners, KSC offers a broad spectrum of health interventions—from emergency care and specialized surgeries to preventative health education and community outreach.

The program plays a key role in bridging gaps within the public healthcare system by supplying essential medications, advanced medical equipment, and highly trained personnel to hospitals and medical centers across the region.

One of its most impactful initiatives is the operation of a fully equipped Neonatal Unit at the Slemani Children’s and Maternity Hospital. Serving over 650 newborns each month, this unit provides free-of-charge, high-quality care that would otherwise cost families upwards of 150 $ per night in the private sector.

KSC also provides critical support to cancer treatment facilities and radiotherapy centers in Slemani, Erbil and Duhok. Through its flagship Ara Project, the organization not only furnishes these centers with medicines and medical staff but also offers psychosocial and financial assistance to children undergoing intensive cancer treatment—ensuring they receive dignified, continuous care.

Recognizing the importance of building local capacity, KSC invites international medical teams to treat complex pediatric conditions such as scoliosis, congenital heart disease, cleft lip and palate and hearing loss. These visiting specialists also conduct in-depth training sessions for local healthcare professionals, thereby raising the overall standard of pediatric care.

Notably, KSC established Iraq’s first dedicated Cleft Lip and Palate Treatment Center at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Emergency Hospital in Slemani. Outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, this facility performs more than 100 surgeries annually and is the only center of its kind in the country.

In partnership with the public health sector, KSC has also contributed to the establishment of Iraq’s first specialized Children’s Heart Hospital, expanding access to advanced cardiac care for children.

Additionally, the organization has launched initiatives to provide dental care under general anesthesia for children with autism and ADHD, ensuring that children with special needs receive appropriate and compassionate treatment.

For families who require treatment abroad for conditions that cannot be addressed locally, KSC offers financial assistance and comprehensive guidance, removing barriers to critical care.

The organization also engages in public health education, disseminating accurate information in schools and public institutions to encourage healthy behaviors from an early age.

In times of public health emergencies, such as the outbreak of cholera, KSC responds rapidly by delivering hygiene materials, protective equipment and emergency medical supplies to frontline health facilities. Most recently, KSC introduced a dedicated Speech Therapy Unit to serve children with cleft conditions, hearing impairments, and speech delays—further broadening the scope of its child-centered health services. It also continues to support the Children’s Rehabilitation Center (CRC), which plays a vital role in helping children with physical disabilities regain mobility and independence.

Extensive renovations create a safer, more therapeutic environment for children receiving mental health care in Slemani

Slemani, Iraq – Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) has successfully completed a comprehensive renovation of the Children's Ward at Shahid Hemn Psychiatric Hospital, enhancing the facility to provide a more healing and supportive environment for young patients. The initiative focused on improving both infrastructure and therapeutic spaces, ensuring that children receive care in a setting that promotes well-being and recovery.

According to Dr. Ramyar Rahim, Health Coordinator at KSC, “The outcomes of the recovery journey are more promising when it occurs in a safe, comfortable and supportive environment, as studies have shown that such settings reduce stress and enhance emotional well-being, leading to better recovery.”

“The Shahid Hemn Psychiatric Hospital serves as a home for many children and individuals with various conditions, such as intellectual disabilities, behavioral issues, autism, Down Syndrome, delayed speech, social anxiety, isolation and those who have experienced trauma due to war, displacement, sexual assault or unfortunate incidents. It also provides hope to parents who are unsure how to overcome the challenges their children face,” he says, adding, “Our aim was to create a non-clinical atmosphere that serves as a space for counseling, examination, diagnosis, providing guidance and bringing hope to both children and their families.”

The renovations included:

• Revitalized Exterior & Interior:

The entire exterior and interior of the Children's Ward were freshly repainted and refurbished, creating a brighter, more welcoming space for children and their families.

Radiation Hall Transformation:

The hall was cleaned, reorganized and divided into two private rooms with new flooring, plastering and modernized doors, improving patient privacy and comfort.

• Structural & Electrical Upgrades:

The roof was completely replaced with concrete, the lighting system was repaired and energy-efficient bulbs and triple-opening windows were installed for better illumination and ventilation.

• Climate Control Enhancements:

Two new air conditioning units were installed in the renovated rooms, and central air systems in the corridors were repaired to maintain a comfortable temperature.

• A Calming Environment:

  We added over ten family-friendly murals to the walls of the Children's Ward at Shahid Hemn Psychiatric Hospital to create a more peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

• New Equipment & Furnishings:

The ward was equipped with updated office supplies, furniture and essential medical tools to improve functionality and patient care.

• Enhanced Privacy & Security:

New separators were constructed between floors to ensure children’s privacy and create a more secure treatment space.

• Comprehensive Clean-Up & Organization:

The entire department underwent a deep clean and reorganization to maintain a hygienic and orderly setting.

‘Mesopotamian Pulse’ poised to become a catalyst for lasting social reform

Slemani, Iraq – In a groundbreaking step towards empowering the youth of the Kurdistan Region, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) is proud to announce the launch of the Mesopotamian Pulse: Youth-Driven Social Policy and Reform Initiative.

This dynamic and transformative project, set to run from February 1, 2025, to August 15, 2025, is designed to amplify the voices of young people and empower them to drive meaningful policy change.

A partnership between KSC and Save the Children International, and with funding from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), this initiative is poised to become a catalyst for lasting social reform.

According to Dyari Mustafa, Youth Ability Development Manager at KSC, “The Mesopotamian Pulse project is a step toward empowering youth to lead meaningful change.”

He says: “Through intensive trainings by professional trainers, these young leaders are gaining the skills to advocate for policy reform, drive social change and support their society. This program will ensure that youth voices are not only heard but actively shape the future of our region, especially in advancing children’s rights and welfare in Slemani, Erbil and Duhok governorates.”

Project Overview

The Mesopotamian Pulse initiative unfolds in three phases that will elevate youth leadership and encourage long-term social policy reform:

1. Youth Training and Capacity Development

A series of training sessions on advocacy, governance and public budgeting will be conducted across all provinces. These sessions will equip young people with the tools they need to shape policies and effectively influence decision-makers.

2. Research and Law Development

Young participants will be forming groups to research and identify pressing social issues, followed by advocacy campaigns aimed at driving policy changes at both regional and national levels.

3. Youth-Led Advocacy and Lawmaking

Participants will engage in online and in-person advocacy to promote social reforms, ensuring that the voices of youth resonate within the policy-making corridors.

Key Outcomes and Impact

●        A youth representative will be selected to sit on the High Committee for the Protection of Children’s Rights at the ministry level, giving young people direct influence over policy discussions.

●        A digital youth platform will be established, creating a sustainable network for youth across the Kurdistan Region that will empower future generations to lead change.

●        A structured and long-term youth advocacy network will be built, poised to influence governmental policy on social issues, particularly those affecting children’s rights and welfare.

Training Sessions

On February 28 and March 1, 2025, the first advocacy training session took place in Erbil and Slemani, bringing together 53 young participants. This session focused on governance, advocacy strategies and public policy engagement, ensuring these young leaders are equipped to drive positive social change in their communities.

Goals and Beneficiaries

Project Objective: Strengthen the capacity of youth in governance and advocacy, establishing a sustainable network of young leaders committed to policy reform.

Direct Beneficiaries:

●       60 participants, including 52 youth and 8 staff members.

Long-Term Impact:

●       Establishing of a youth-led advocacy network that influences social policy at the government level, creating lasting change for future generations.

Through this initiative, KSC reaffirms its commitment to empowering youth as agents of change, ensuring their voices are heard and their advocacy drives the reform needed to safeguard the rights and welfare of children in the Kurdistan Region.

Kalar, Kurdistan Region – In a concerted effort to tackle the escalating issue of drug abuse, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC), in partnership with PAO Organization (Garmiyan Volunteer Group), convened a panel discussion at the Youth Activity Center in Kalar.

The event, held on 24 February, delved into the legal, psychological and societal facets of addiction, aiming to foster a comprehensive understanding and develop actionable strategies to address the crisis.

Distinguished Panelists:

·         Judge Muharram Rasul Ali: Investigating Judge of Kalar, provided an in-depth analysis of the current legal framework governing drug-related offenses in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, highlighting areas necessitating reform.

·         Dr. Sarhad Mohammed Samin: Professor at Garmiyan University, offered insights into the psychological ramifications of addiction, emphasizing the necessity for accessible mental health services and community support systems.

·         M. Khalid Khudadad: Civil Activist, discussed the pervasive societal impacts of substance abuse, advocating for grassroots initiatives and community engagement to combat stigma and promote rehabilitation.

·         Amanj Mohammed Najm: Panel Moderator, facilitated the discourse, ensuring a cohesive exploration of the multifaceted challenges posed by drug abuse.

A significant portion of the discussion centered on the influential role of media in shaping public perceptions. Panelists cautioned against sensational portrayals that may inadvertently glamorize drug use, advocating instead for responsible reporting that educates and informs the public about the dangers of substance abuse.

According to Dyari Mustafa, Youth Ability Development Program Manager at KSC, addressing drug abuse requires more than just enforcement— “it demands education, community support, and a shift in perception.”

“By bringing legal experts, mental health professionals, and civil society together, we are not just discussing the problem; we are forging a path toward real solutions,” he said. “Every young person deserves a future free from the grip of addiction, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure they have the support and resources to choose life over drugs.”

This initiative is part of KSC’s broader mission to safeguard the youth from the perils of drug addiction. Building upon the momentum of the nationwide “Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs” campaign launched in March 2024, KSC continues to spearhead awareness campaigns and educational programs. Slemani – To mark International Childhood Cancer Day, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) is launching a series of fundraising and awareness campaigns across Iraq. These initiatives aim to raise essential funds for the purchase of infusion pumps, critical devices for providing life-saving chemotherapy treatment to children battling cancer. At the same time, KSC will lead an awareness campaign to educate communities about childhood cancer, emphasizing early diagnosis, treatment access and the importance of psychosocial support for both patients and their families.

Every year, over 400,000 children and adolescents under the age of 20 are diagnosed with cancer, and cancer is the second-leading cause of death among children aged 5-14 (WHO, 2021). The most common childhood cancers include leukemia, brain tumors, lymphomas and solid tumors such as neuroblastoma and Wilms tumors. Unlike adult cancers, childhood cancers are not typically linked to lifestyle factors and cannot always be prevented through routine screenings. However, early diagnosis and access to appropriate treatment significantly improve survival rates.

KSC, as a member of Childhood Cancer International (CCI), is part of a global network of over 180 organizations committed to improving care, treatment and support for children with cancer worldwide.

Campaign Goals

KSC’s campaign focuses on two key goals:

1.Fundraising for Infusion Pumps: KSC is working to raise funds for purchasing infusion pumps to improve chemotherapy treatment for children in Iraq. An infusion pump is a medical device that delivers medication or fluids directly into a patient's body at a precise rate. In chemotherapy, infusion pumps ensure that the correct dosage of medication is administered safely and effectively. These pumps are vital for children with cancer, as they provide controlled delivery of treatment, reducing the risk of complications and ensuring better outcomes.

2.Raising Awareness about Childhood Cancer: In addition to fundraising, KSC is running an awareness campaign to educate communities on recognizing early signs of childhood cancer, the importance of early detection, and the critical need for timely treatment. The campaign also stresses the importance of emotional and psychosocial support, which plays a vital role in improving outcomes for children and their families.

Panel Discussion on Holistic Approaches to Childhood Cancer

As part of its advocacy efforts, KSC will participate in a panel discussion at Qaiwan International University. Slemani, Iraq – After a decade of dedicated service, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) is transitioning its approach to supporting children with special needs. Originally launched as a five-year pilot project, the rehabilitation center was designed with the long-term goal of being integrated into the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) services. While KSC extended its support for an additional five years to facilitate this transition, challenges remain in fully transferring management to the regional government. As a result, KSC is now exploring ways to continue advocating for and assisting children with special needs in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Over the past 10 years, KSC has invested significant resources to sustain the center, including financial support for specialized staff, with a staff-to-child ratio of 1:3. The facility also requires urgent renovations, which the regional government has committed to undertaking once the handover is complete. However, the sustainability of operating a stand-alone center remains a challenge.

As part of our evolving strategy, KSC is shifting its focus towards strengthening the broader system for children with special needs. While the center has provided invaluable support to those who could access it, many children across the region remain underserved. Our goal is to expand our impact by working within the education system to ensure inclusive and sustainable solutions.

“This was not an easy decision, but we believe it is the right one for the future of children with special needs in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region,” said Sara Rashid, President of Kurdistan Save the Children. “By focusing our efforts on strengthening government programs and ensuring proper implementation of inclusive education policies, we can reach more children and create lasting change.”

A ministerial order has been issued for children with special needs to be integrated into schools through dedicated resource rooms, but implementation has been inconsistent. KSC is committed to supporting this process, ensuring children receive the necessary resources and assistance within the school system. Additionally, we will focus on strengthening existing government centers for children with special needs, fostering long-term sustainability and accessibility.

“Unfortunately, NGOs do not have unlimited funds, and we have to work hard to prioritize our resources to make the biggest impact,” said Shler Sardar, Programme Director at KSC. “By shifting our focus to strengthening government services and promoting inclusive education, we can reach more children in a sustainable way.”

To support families and children during this transition, KSC will ensure that children are referred to existing government centers and schools to continue receiving the care and education they need. We will also maintain support groups for families and integrate activities for children with special needs at Sarra Children’s Activity Center, ensuring they continue to have access to safe, inclusive, and engaging spaces.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the honorable staff who have worked tirelessly over the past decade to provide care and support to these children. Their dedication, compassion and hard work have made a lasting impact on the lives of many families and we truly appreciate their unwavering commitment.

SLEMANI: KSC Hosts Webinar on Rebuilding Education for Iraqi Children Amid Crisis

Experts highlight urgent need for improved school infrastructure and inclusion of children with disabilities.

Slemani, Iraq – Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) hosted a webinar on Sunday titled “Education in Crisis: Rebuilding Opportunities for Iraqi Children,” bringing together key education stakeholders to address the urgent challenges facing Iraq’s education sector.

Moderated by Dr. Zana Aziz Mahmoud, Lecturer at Sulaimani University, the panel featured Omer Wahab, Education Specialist at UNICEF Iraq; Ammar Rafia Salman, Assistant Director General at the Iraqi Ministry of Education; Taher Al Kaki, Associate Project Officer at UNESCO Iraq; and Jailan Sabah, Education Program Manager at KSC.

Education Challenges in Post-Conflict Iraq

Panelists highlighted the severe impact of conflict, particularly the ISIS crisis, which has devastated Iraq’s education system. Ammar Rafia Salman emphasized that the crisis had led to catastrophic consequences for children, youth and especially girls, as well as long-term disruptions in education. He pointed out that a lack of school infrastructure remains one of the biggest obstacles, leading to overcrowded schools with double and triple shifts, shortened lesson times and limited space for students.

He further stressed the importance of re-enrolling out-of-school children and advancing policies for lifelong learning, particularly for displaced persons and children with disabilities.

Ammar Rafia Salman also highlighted the importance of reforming Iraq’s education system to align with global frameworks.

“A critical step moving forward is the adoption of new examination methods that align with current educational needs, in accordance with the SDG goals and the Marrakesh Framework for Action,” he said. “The UIL report presented to the UN General Assembly, in particular the resolution on literacy for life, addresses these issues and calls for a comprehensive approach to improve education for all.”

The Struggles of Internally Displaced Children

Omer Wahab addressed the situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Iraq, noting that over 1 million IDPs remain, with 650,000 residing in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). Despite 370 IDP schools operating under the Ministry of Education, he stressed that more support is needed to ensure quality education for displaced children.

“Currently, 45% of IDP schools are prefabricated structures built in 2014 at the start of the crisis,” Wahab said. While NGOs have provided annual support for renovations, he noted that these schools require long-term, sustainable solutions.

With 158,000 IDP children still in need of support, Wahab called for greater investment in stabilizing education for displaced communities.

Building Inclusive and Accessible Schools

Focusing on education accessibility, Jailan Sabah emphasized the need to integrate infrastructure for children with disabilities into school designs.

“We have come a long way from exclusion and segregation, and I’m glad to see progress toward integration,” she said. However, she noted that many schools were built without accessibility in mind, lacking elevators, ramps, and proper resource rooms for children with special needs. She stressed that a proper resource room must include ramps, wide doorways, non-slip flooring, proper lighting, and noise reduction to accommodate sensory needs.

While acknowledging the high costs of infrastructure improvements, Sabah remained optimistic, stating that education is one of the fastest-changing sectors, and these changes have been largely positive.

Challenges in Enforcing Education Policies

Sabah also pointed out the gap between policy and enforcement when it comes to inclusive education. While Iraq has strong laws supporting education for children with disabilities, many children are still denied enrollment due to individual decisions made by school principals.

She cited a recent case where a child was misdiagnosed with ADHD. After an evaluation at KSC’s center for children with special needs, it was determined that the child did not have ADHD and was later successfully enrolled in school.

“Even if the diagnosis had been correct, the law mandates that children with ADHD must be enrolled,” she said, stressing that awareness and training are needed for both educators and medical professionals to prevent such cases.

Importance of Data for Education Reform

Taher Al Kaki, Associate Project Officer at UNESCO Iraq, stressed the importance of reliable data in rebuilding Iraq’s education system.

“One important point I want to raise is the issue we face in Iraq related to special education and the overall Department of Education, specifically the quality of the data we have regarding education and other related topics,” he said.

He elaborated on the need for accurate data, explaining that most statistics in Iraq are based on estimations.

“As part of our ongoing efforts following Phase One of the project, we are collaborating with the Ministry of Education, both in Iraq and in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). One of the main components of this project is the establishment of an Education Management Information System (EMIS), which will provide us with clear, specific data on everything related to the educational system in Iraq,” Al Kaki added.

He concluded, “Having accurate data will support related topics and significantly improve the quality of overall educational programs.”

A Call for Collective Action

Throughout the webinar, panelists agreed that addressing these challenges requires collaboration between NGOs, government institutions, and international organizations.

“We still have a long way to go, but with collaboration between NGOs, the government, the medical community, and other active organizations, I believe we can take meaningful steps forward in supporting children with special needs,” said Sabah.

New Amendments Spark Debate on Marriage Age, Custody Rights and Protections for Women and Children

Slemani, Iraq — The recent passage of amendments to Iraq’s Personal Status Law on 21 January 2025 has sparked widespread concern, particularly about its potential impact on the rights of women, children and families. The amendments have raised critical questions about marriage age and custody arrangements, leaving many Iraqis uncertain about their implications.

At Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC), we remain deeply committed to safeguarding the rights and welfare of children and their communities. To address public concerns, our in-house legal team has carefully reviewed the amendments and provided answers to pressing questions about their potential impact.

 Q&A with Miran Ali, Director, KSC Legal Team

 1.     What is the current legal age for marriage in Iraq? Does it differ in the Kurdistan Region?

Miran Ali: In Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the minimum legal age for marriage is 18. However, in Iraq, judges may permit marriages from the age of 15, while in the Kurdistan Region, the threshold is 16 under specific conditions, i.e. with the consent of the legal guardian. The latest amendment to the Personal Status Law reiterates that the Shia code must align with these age limits, providing some legal safeguards.

 2.     Will 9-year-olds be allowed to marry?

Miran Ali: No, they should not in accordance with the current law. The new amendment allows the drafting of a Shia-specific code of law based on Jafaari principles, to be finalized within four months. Although in some Jafaari schools there is no minimum age of marriage and relations are permitted from puberty (as young as 9 years old), the amendment stipulates that the Shia code must not contradict the current marriage age law.

 3.     If an underage bride or groom is unwilling to marry, does the new law allow or compel such marriages to proceed?

Miran Ali: No, underage marriages (below 16 in the Kurdistan Region and 15 in the rest of Iraq) are not legally permitted. Judges are required to verify the consent and willingness of both parties before approving a marriage. If an underage individual is unwilling, the marriage cannot proceed. Unfortunately we do see cases of forced or early marriage in communities in Iraq, therefore a strict implementation of the law as well as community awareness is vital. It is also critical that marriages are officiated through legal courts, as the amendment suggests. In cases of early or forced marriage, victims and their families are encouraged to seek support from government agencies, such as the Department of Women’s Empowerment, domestic violence departments, juvenile courts or NGOs that protect women and children.

 4.     What are the main concerns with the approved Personal Status Law amendments, particularly with regards to the rights of women and children?

Miran Ali: The lack of transparency in drafting the Shia code of law is a primary concern. While the amendments acknowledge Jafaari principles, which touch on areas like inheritance, dowries and guardianship, it remains unclear how these principles will be incorporated. The uncertainty around the finalized code of law leaves significant room for concern about potential violations of women’s and children’s rights. We will know more within four months when the code of law is drafted and submitted to parliament. Once submitted, parliament will have 30 days to cast their vote. We hope that lawmakers take the time to thoroughly study the implications of this legislation before voting. One concerning issue is the provision for mixed households of Shia and Sunnis. If there is disagreement over which code of law applies to their family, the courts default to the husband’s code. This raises questions about whether women’s and men’s rights are being treated equally in such cases. Another aspect to consider is the authority of the scientific Shia committee which intervenes to decide when there is ambiguity in the code.

 5.     In cases of divorce under the new law, what happens to custody and access rights? Does the mother automatically lose custody?

Miran Ali: Under current law, custody typically remains with the mother until the child reaches 15 years of age provided the mother is deemed fit. However, the Jafaari code in some schools grant fathers sole guardianship of children from the age of 2. The amendments recommend maintaining maternal custody of any child until the age of 7, but there is no clarity about custody arrangements beyond this age. This ambiguity is a source of concern.

 6.     Does the new law specifically apply to Shia Muslims, or does it have broader implications?

Miran Ali: The amendments apply to all Iraqi Muslims, allowing individuals to choose between Shia and Sunni personal status laws. The Shia-specific code, based on Jafaari principles, will apply only to Shias, or anyone who chooses the Shia code. The code is expected to be drafted within four months and submitted to parliament for review. It is crucial that the parliament thoroughly scrutinizes the code to prevent unintended consequences for the rights of women and children.

7.     Does this amendment violate international law or Iraq’s constitution?

Miran Ali: The Iraqi constitution guarantees equality for men, women and children and any code of law must align with these constitutional rights. Iraq is also a signatory to international human rights conventions, which set clear guidelines on protecting women and children. While the amendments aim to respect individual choices in personal status, the finalized code of law must not contradict Iraq’s constitutional and international obligations – even if some Jafaari principles do.

8.     Did the voting process in parliament go smoothly?

Miran Ali: No, the voting process faced significant challenges. It is reported that many lawmakers present at the session did not cast their votes, which broke the legal quorum. Complaints have already been filed regarding the voting process, and there is a high likelihood that it will result in a legal appeal to the Federal Court.

Speaking at the event, KSC’s Youth Ability Development program manager, Dyari Mustafa explained, “The Alwand Dam was chosen due to the lack of environmental activities and services in the area. This project is a crucial step toward restoring balance and engaging the community in preserving our natural resources and enhancing fish wealth.”

Slemani – Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC), in collaboration with the Slemani General Directorate of Health and Shar Hospital, is proud to spotlight the life-saving work of Dr. Kardo Raouf and his team in providing free spinal surgeries for children suffering from spinal curvature.

This partnership has significantly improved the health and well-being of vulnerable children in the Kurdistan Region, offering hope and medical care that would otherwise be out of reach for many families.

Since 2021, KSC has worked alongside Dr. Kardo, an orthopedic surgeon renowned for his expertise, who has made multiple visits to the region to perform surgeries and train local medical staff. Dr. Awder Abdulrazaq Xaznadar, a skilled neurosurgeon, has supported Dr. Kardo throughout these operations, further enhancing the program’s impact. Together, they have ensured the success of these complex procedures while also sharing their expertise with local medical professionals.

Each year, Dr. Kardo visits Slemani more than three times, screening 20 to 25 children per visit. Together with Dr. Awder and their team, they perform two to three life-saving surgeries on each visit, all at no cost to the families. These critical procedures, which would typically cost over $20,000 in private hospitals, are made available to the families through the collaboration between KSC, the Slemani General Directorate of Health, and Shar Hospital.

KSC’s contribution extends beyond facilitating access to medical care; the organization plays a key role in arranging Dr. Kardo’s visits, ensuring that local doctors and surgeons receive ongoing training and mentorship. This capacity-building approach strengthens the region’s healthcare system, ensuring that local medical professionals can continue providing high-quality care to children long into the future.

During his most recent visit, Dr. Kardo successfully performed two surgeries and met with over 20 children and their families. His work, facilitated by KSC, directly addresses a critical gap in specialized medical care for children with complex health conditions in the Kurdistan Region.

Slemani, Iraq – Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) President Sara Rashid outlined an ambitious vision for the organization’s future, building on its proud legacy to expand initiatives and forge new partnerships. The plan reaffirms KSC’s steadfast commitment to supporting children and youth across Iraq’s Kurdistan Region and beyond.

Speaking at the KSC Variety Show in a hall filled with children, youth, families and prominent guests, including Iraq’s First Lady and KSC founder Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmad, Sara Rashid highlighted KSC’s groundbreaking initiatives over the past decades, including the establishment of a pediatric heart hospital, national cancer awareness campaigns and the “No to Drugs, Yes to Life” campaign.

She emphasized that KSC’s achievements are made possible through the generosity of kind donors—individuals, companies and charities.

“Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do our work. Alone, we cannot do anything without our partners,” she said.

Sara Rashid went on to share her personal connection to KSC, recalling childhood memories of participating in fundraising events with her mother.

It is truly an honor to stand before you tonight at this wonderful event, and see this hall filled with children, youth and adults—all united in support of creativity.

As many of you know, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) was born in 1991, founded by two remarkable women: Ms Hero and Ms Shanaz, alongside a group of dedicated volunteers. Some of them are with us today, like Ms Runak, while others are deeply missed. Together, they planted seeds of hope and change during a time when these were desperately needed. Their vision was simple yet profound: to ensure every child, no matter the circumstances, has the right to a childhood.

I remember being just 4 years old when I accompanied my mother to fundraising events, helping collect donations for children in need. These were more than just gatherings—they were lessons in compassion, resilience and the power of collective action.

Let me be clear that I am not here by chance. Beyond the profound influence of the two founders, this work is my life’s calling. I dedicated my academic journey to this very purpose, studying Global Health and researching post-conflict development. And no matter where else I worked, my heart always belonged to KSC.

Since joining the organization in 2012, I have worked at every level. From volunteering at Hiwa Hospital to teaching English at Sarshaqam Kaziwa—although I must admit, I wasn’t very good—to supervising emergency child protection responses during a time when there was an influx of 1.2 million displaced persons, as well as representing KSC on global platforms.

Today, as President of KSC, my commitment is to uphold the original values of KSC, and I am deeply proud to continue the journey the founders started, but, on a new path, finding new ways to address today’s challenges. Over the past decade, we have tried to adapt to meet the evolving needs of our children and youth. Some of our key initiatives include opening the Pediatric Heart Hospital, and launching national campaigns, such as “No to Drugs, Yes to Life”.

Allow me to share a few statistics of our work:

·      Since 1991, the sponsorship program has supported 11,930 children.

·      In 2024 alone, 1,726 children have accessed our child protection services, and 722 have benefited from surgeries or medical care.

·      Over 7,200 youths have participated in skills development projects, and 2,100 children have received services through our educational projects.

These numbers are just a glimpse of what we do.

Many people often ask, “How do you fund your projects? Do you receive government financial support?” The answer is no. Our work is made possible thanks to kind donors—individuals, companies and charities. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do our work. Alone, we cannot do anything without our partners.

To me, KSC is more than an organization. It is a movement. A family. A light. We must see every child safe, every youth empowered, and every adult engaged in building a compassionate society.

As I stand here tonight and look out at all of you, I am filled with optimism. Yes, the challenges are immense, but so is our determination. Together, there is no limit to what we can achieve.

SLEMANI, IRAQ: KSC Calls for Urgent Action as Humanitarian Crisis Escalates in Northeast Syria (Rojava)

Over 300,000 displaced amid ongoing fighting; influx of refugees from Aleppo and surrounding areas overwhelms local resources and shelter capacities

A devastating humanitarian tragedy is unfolding in Kurdish-held northeast Syria (Rojava), where more than 300,000 displaced individuals—many of them women and children—have fled recent violence in the northwestern region of Al-Shahba.

The influx of refugees, primarily from Aleppo and surrounding areas, has overwhelmed local resources, leaving families with no adequate shelter, food or medical care.

In response, the Kurdish-controlled Autonomous Administration of Northeast Syria has activated emergency plans to accommodate the growing number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) arriving through the Tabqa crossing point.

As one local humanitarian worker stated, “[Armed groups] occupied the whole region in Aleppo including Al-Shahba. We have no access right now, and we don’t know how the situation will unfold in the coming days. We are activating the emergency plan to receive a large number of IDPs coming to northeast Syria through the Tabqa crossing point.”

The worker, who cannot be named for security reasons, also highlighted the destruction of vital infrastructure. The housing development constructed in Al-Shahba, part of the joint “Hawxamtanin” aid project following the February 2023 earthquake, has been severely damaged by the occupation of armed groups. The project had involved collaboration between several organizations, including KSC and the Civil Development Organization.

Currently, displaced families are seeking shelter from the cold in overcrowded schools and mosques, with resources stretched beyond capacity. The closure of key border crossings, including the Til Kochar (Al-Yarubiyah) crossing with Iraq, has significantly hindered the delivery of essential humanitarian aid.

“This is a humanitarian tragedy of immense scale,” says Sara Rashid, KSC President. “The situation has reached a critical point, with access to basic necessities like food, water and medical care already dire. The current crisis has only exacerbated these challenges, further straining already limited resources and services. We call for immediate diplomatic measures to be taken to open border crossings and allow the urgent flow of aid. Only through coordinated action can we prevent further suffering among these vulnerable populations.”

Rashid further emphasized the need for special attention to children, many of whom may be unaccompanied and at increased risk in these perilous conditions.

“In these difficult times, it is essential that the international community upholds its commitment to human rights, particularly the rights of children. Children are among the most vulnerable in this crisis, and we must ensure they are not overlooked in the delivery of aid and protection.”

KSC calls on international agencies and donors to urgently mobilize resources and ensure that lifesaving supplies, particularly for children—such as food, medicine and shelter materials—are delivered without delay.

SLEMANI – Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) is proud to highlight its continued commitment to improving the lives of children with cleft lip and palate conditions, thanks to the expertise of Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr. Brian Sommerlad-CLEFT chairman. 

Since 2012, Dr. Sommerlad’s visits to Slemani have been integral in advancing specialized care for children affected by these congenital conditions. In partnership with the Slemani General Directorate of Health and the Slemani Burn, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Hospital, KSC has helped establish the region's first dedicated center for cleft lip and palate treatment—now known as The Sommerlad Center. This center serves as a critical resource for comprehensive care, offering hope to children and families in the region.

Through KSC’s coordination and support, Dr. Sommerlad has conducted 11 visits to the Kurdistan Region, assessing more than 70 children and performing 12 to 16 life-changing surgeries during each visit. These vital procedures, which would typically cost upwards of $25,000 per patient in private hospitals, are made accessible at no charge thanks to the collaborative efforts of KSC, Dr. Sommerlad and the medical team at Slemani Burn, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Hospital. 

KSC is equally committed to ensuring long-term solutions for cleft care. In addition to providing direct medical support, KSC works alongside Dr. Sommerlad to build local capacity through both theoretical and practical training for Slemani’s surgeons. This initiative is designed to ensure that the region continue to provide expert care for children with cleft conditions, even after Dr. Sommerlad’s visits have concluded.

Beyond medical treatment, KSC is amplifying the voices of the children whose lives have been transformed through these surgeries. Exhibitions showcasing their success stories have raised awareness about the challenges and triumphs of living with cleft lip and palate, highlighting the importance of specialized care and community support. 

As Dr. Sommerlad prepares for his next visit, with plans to perform 16 additional surgeries, KSC remains steadfast in its commitment to providing hope and a brighter future for children with congenital anomalies. New Halabja, Iraq – Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) has launched an urgent awareness and prevention campaign in response to a recent outbreak of diarrhea and vomiting in Sharazur district, particularly in New Halabja.

The health crisis, which emerged earlier this month, was triggered by heavy rains and flooding that contaminated drinking water with sewage, leading to a rapid spread of illness across schools and communities.

Recognizing the significant threat to local residents, especially children, KSC has taken immediate action in collaboration with health and education authorities in Sharazur. The campaign, rolled out this week, includes:

·         Distribution of hand sanitizers to students in affected schools.

·         Public health awareness sessions on hygiene and prevention practices.

·         Provision of essential medicines to hospitals treating patients.

·         Sanitization of water storage facilities to prevent further contamination.

With more than 500 children currently hospitalized and over 15,000 residents expected to benefit from the campaign, KSC’s intervention aims to curb the outbreak and safeguard the health of the entire community.

“Our teams are working tirelessly to contain this outbreak and prevent further infections,” said KSC President Sara Rashid. “By addressing immediate needs and promoting hygiene awareness, we hope to protect children and families from future health crises.”

Iraq – Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) has launched a vital initiative to supply essential medical items to the Zhianawa Cancer Center, helping ensure timely, effective treatment for pediatric radiation therapy patients and others in need. This effort highlights KSC’s commitment to alleviating suffering and supporting the most vulnerable in their journey to recovery.

The donation includes over 3,000 critical supplies, such as painkillers, vitamin supplements, burn creams and other essential medications designed to relieve pain and minimize the side effects of radiation. For patients undergoing radiation therapy — who often endure painful skin burns and significant discomfort – these supplies will provide much-needed support.

Prior to KSC’s intervention, the Zhianawa Cancer Center faced ongoing shortages of these essential medications, posing challenges to consistent care and delaying treatment for many, especially young patients. Recognizing this urgent need, KSC stepped in to ensure that these resources are now available and accessible to all who require them.

KSC Condemns Shocking Child Labor Reports, Calls for Immediate Action and Stronger Protections for Vulnerable Children

Slemani, Iraq – November 12, 2024: Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) is deeply concerned by recent unofficial reports highlighting alarming cases of child labor in our city. The exploitation of vulnerable children is unacceptable and KSC has mobilized its night-time security team to work closely with local law enforcement to investigate reported incidents, examine video footage and determine whether these alleged incidents in front of our headquarters are part of an organized child labor operation or a potential smear campaign.

Regardless of the outcome of this investigation, it should be clear that KSC is committed to taking immediate and appropriate actions against the perpetrators, swiftly and thoroughly.

KSC has dedicated countless hours to child workshops and advocacy, urging the government to implement stronger measures to protect vulnerable children and calling for harsher penalties for anyone who exploits children, even family members.

Launched in 2007, KSC’s Child Labor Protection and Monitoring Project works in close collaboration with local authorities to address exploitation risks facing children. The project has made strides across Slemani, Erbil, Duhok and surrounding areas. Since 2023, KSC’s Child Protection and Observation Committee has conducted over 12,480 site visits, identifying 1,584 children at risk, who were subsequently removed from hazardous environments. At the Sara Children Activity Center, 208 children from Slemani alone have been receiving crucial psychosocial care, helping them to recover from trauma and rebuild their emotional well-being in a supportive environment.

Our recommendations, submitted to policymakers, include an updated list of hazardous activities that should be prohibited to minors, along with a review of child labor laws to ensure they address modern challenges. However, to truly prevent child labor and abuse, we must address the underlying cause: poverty. KSC is advocating for a benefits system that ensures essential healthcare, food security and social services for children living below the poverty line, creating a safety net for vulnerable families and reducing the risk of child exploitation.

Programs like KSC’s Sponsorship Project provide monthly financial support to eligible families, enabling children to focus on their education and development, rather than work. In collaboration with juvenile police and various other municipal bodies, KSC’s social workers monitor these children and ensure they have access to vital services. KSC also conducts awareness programs for families and communities to build a stronger understanding of the risks and impact of child labor.

To strengthen protections, KSC has partnered with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs to advance the Committee for Monitoring and Protecting Working Children, attending monthly High Council for Child Protection meetings.

To ensure a more robust and united front, KSC is spearheading efforts to establish a national task force on child labor aimed at creating coordinated, long-term solutions to this crisis.

Casting unfounded allegations against KSC’s integrity detracts from our mission and jeopardizes the well-being of the children we strive to protect. The training introduced core concepts essential for safeguarding vulnerable youth in state care and covered the following key areas:

• Legal Definition of a Child: An exploration of child definitions in both local and international contexts, highlighting the legal frameworks that underpin children’s rights.

Iraq – In its ongoing mission to champion children’s health, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) has successfully concluded its activities for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 2024, centering its efforts on childhood cancer awareness through its Ara Project. This initiative aligns with KSC’s long-standing dedication to addressing critical health issues affecting children and reflects its involvement in Childhood Cancer International (CCI) Asia since 2014.

The Ara Project, a highlight of KSC’s September 2024 campaign, aimed to raise awareness about the challenges of childhood cancer through a series of impactful events. These activities brought much-needed attention to the cause and offered opportunities for public education and engagement:

1.Billboard Campaign: KSC launched a prominent billboard campaign in Slemani and Duhok, strategically positioning messages about childhood cancer along major roads to maximize visibility across the region.

2.Art Exhibitions: A series of art exhibitions held in Slemani, Erbil and Duhok featured paintings and handicrafts created by children with cancer. The exhibitions attracted significant attention from local media and visitors, offering a platform to showcase the resilience and creativity of young patients. 

3.Public Vehicle Branding: In partnership with the Slemani Health Directorate, KSC branded public vehicles with the Golden Rainbow logo, symbolizing the fight against childhood cancer. The logo, displayed on vehicles throughout the cities, helped spread awareness widely.

Continuous Psychological Support: KSC offers continuous psychological, social and financial support to children with cancer and their families at Hiwa Hospital in Slemani, Zhyanawa Center in Slemani, Nanakali Hospital in Erbil, and Zhin Center in Duhok. These centers, which serve refugee, IDP, and host communities, provide essential tests, treatment and surgeries. KSC's permanent staff offer ongoing emotional and mental health support to children and families throughout their treatment journey.

Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) played a leading role in organizing the inaugural Academic Conference on Child Protection, alongside the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the High Council for Child Protection, UNICEF, and Save the Children International.

Under the theme “Child Protection is Our Duty,” the event gathered key stakeholders, including ministers from the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Deputy Minister of Labor from the Iraqi Federal Government, the Governor of Erbil, and representatives from various universities across the Kurdistan Region.

This landmark event provided an essential platform to address the critical challenges facing children’s rights in the Kurdistan Region. KSC had the privilege of presenting its research and contributing to collective efforts aimed at strengthening child protection mechanisms and securing a brighter future for children.

KSC Contribution: Confronting Child Labor

A central highlight of KSC’s participation and contribution was the presentation of its research, “Cultural and Social Factors of Child Labor,” which delves into the root causes of child labor in the region. The study identified key cultural and social drivers, providing both insight and direction for action.

Key findings include:

• A detailed analysis of local factors contributing to child labor, such as cultural norms and socioeconomic pressures.

• Actionable recommendations for the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, calling for more robust policies to combat child labor and enhance protection measures.

This research marks a significant step forward in the ongoing battle to eliminate child labor, with a goal of ensuring that every child in the region grows up in a safe and nurturing environment.

Conference Discussions: Protecting the Rights of All Children

The conference featured over 30 research studies focused on child protection, covering pressing topics such as child rights governance, mental health, psychosocial support, and the current legal frameworks. On the second day, discussions broadened to include often-overlooked yet crucial topics, such as:

• Children with Disabilities – Emphasizing the need to improve access to services and support for this vulnerable group.

• Violence and Cyberbullying – Exploring strategies to protect children from harm in both physical and digital spaces.

KSC recognizes the importance of these discussions and is fully committed to advocating for the rights and protection of all children, irrespective of their background or circumstances. Every child deserves to be cared for, protected, and given the opportunity to thrive.

A Call to Action

KSC remains unwavering in its mission to protect children across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. The findings from this conference, including our research on child labor, will be instrumental in shaping future policies and enhancing child protection frameworks.

Child labor, one of the most troubling social issues of our time, has far-reaching social, psychological, and physical consequences for the affected children.

Nask Ismail, KSC’s Child Protection Program Manager, emphasized: “Our research seeks to uncover the cultural and social factors driving child labor and develop targeted strategies to reduce it. The results highlight that poor economic conditions, exploitation, and weak enforcement of anti-child labor regulations are among the main drivers of this issue.”

Based on qualitative research through focus group discussions (FGDs) with experts and those directly involved in addressing the issue, the study also revealed that a lack of parental awareness of the harmful impacts of child labor is a significant cultural and social factor contributing to the problem.

IRAQ: KSC Launches Critical Campaign to Combat Cholera Outbreak

In response to an alarming rise in cholera cases throughout Iraq, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) has kicked off an awareness campaign to address the prevention, symptoms and treatment of this severe bacterial infection.

A lack of sanitation and hygiene, mass displacement and global warming all contribute to the prevalence of cholera in Iraq, where 1,332 cases were reported in January alone by the World Health Organization (WHO).

A dangerous bacterial disease that leads to severe diarrhea, vomiting and rapid dehydration, cholera poses significant health risks, particularly to children who are more vulnerable due to their developing immune systems and dietary habits. The disease is primarily spread through contaminated water, contact with infected individuals and eating fruits and vegetables that have been irrigated with polluted water.

According to Dr. Hersh Rauf, pediatrician, “Children are most vulnerable to cholera because their immune systems are still developing, making them less able to cope with dehydration and illness. Quick recognition and action are vital to safeguard their health.”

KSC spearheaded a comprehensive summer campaign to combat cholera through extensive public education. The campaign includes the distribution of awareness leaflets in public spaces and health centers, aimed at informing the community about cholera and its risks. It also focuses on educating families about recognizing symptoms, initial home treatment, and the importance of seeking medical care. Emphasis is placed on preventive measures such as hand hygiene, safe food and water practices, and general disease prevention strategies.

“It is crucial for families to understand the symptoms of cholera and act promptly. Early intervention can be the difference between life and death for a child,” says Dr. Rauf.

KSC’s efforts are crucial in equipping parents and children with the knowledge needed to prevent cholera and address it effectively if it occurs. Given the higher risk to children, immediate and informed action is essential to protect the health of the community.

Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) proudly celebrates its 33rd anniversary, marking over three decades of unwavering dedication to the welfare of children throughout the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

KSC was founded by former First Lady of Iraq Hero Ibrahim Ahmad in 1991, in the wake of the uprisings in Iraq which resulted in 1.5 million Kurds fleeing their homes to find safety in the mountains or neighboring Iran, Turkey and Western countries. The humanitarian catastrophe compelled the UN Security Council to issue Resolution 688, which announced a no-fly zone over Kurdish territory in northern Iraq. During this period, the Kurdish population faced severe hardships, including widespread hunger and cold weather, leading to the deaths of many children.

Over the years, KSC – a non-profit, non-political and non-sectarian organization – has remained a steadfast advocate for children, regardless of race, gender, political and religious differences, providing hope for a better life despite the immense challenges and offering essential support to create lasting change.

Today, under the patronage of Iraq’s First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmad, KSC continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving the lives of children through comprehensive programs and initiatives.

Legacy of Empowerment and Support

In addressing the diverse and complex needs of children in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, KSC programs take a multi-faceted holistic approach.

Education Program

In line with its stated mission to ensure that every child has access to quality education, KSC has made remarkable strides over the last year, reaching a total of 2,107 beneficiaries through various initiatives.

·         Over 90 students attended Shahid Jabbar Exemplary High School, and 315 students participated in their summer course.

·         163 youth benefited from training courses in Qushtapa and Darashakran camps.

·         305 children received educational support at the Children’s Activity Center-Chwarta.

·         847 benefited from services at the Children’s Activity Center – Arbat.

·         175 children attended the Kaziwa Kindergarten at Arbat camp.

·         1,185 children received Non-Formal Education (NFE) Needs Assessments.

·         20 youths took part in training courses conducted in four schools.

·         187 children were given appropriate care by the Educational Training Centre for Children with Special Needs.

 Child Protection

Since its establishment, KSC’s Child Protection Program has worked toward creating a protective environment for children, free from violence and exploitation. This year the program achieved significant milestones, including case management for 253 children, income generation for 9 foster parents, and legal services for 99 children. The program also provided school clothes and stationery for 81 children, and removed 414 children from dangerous environments. Awareness activities reached 519 working children, 414 parents, and 395 citizens. Additionally, 397 workplace visits were conducted, leading to the closure of 25 places and warnings issued to 3 places by the Child Protection Committee for violation of child labor laws.

Sponsorship

A key component of the Child Protection Program, the Sponsorship Project provided cash assistance to 752 families and conducted case management for 65 children. The project also supported low-income families with equipment (527 beneficiaries) and distributed food baskets to 1,155 families.

Income generation projects were launched in Chamchamal, Kalar, Slemani, Halabja, Koya, Qaladize, and Kirkuk, including tailoring projects, bakeries, and shops, resulting in 11 revenue-generating projects.

Partnership with UNHCR

In partnership with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), KSC implemented initiatives focused on refugee protection and assistance. Over the past nine months:

·         Case management was provided for 1,473 children, with 203 receiving physiotherapy treatment.

·         The Best Interest Assessment was conducted for 1,432 children, and structured psychosocial support reached 647 children and adolescents.

·         Best Interest Determination was conducted for 19 children, and 430 parents participated in parenting courses.

·         227 community members, 150 NGO staff, and 90 government staff received child protection training.

·         Awareness activities engaged 3,176 people, and informal psychosocial support was provided to 4,535 children.

Health Program

Since its inception in 2005, KSC’s Health Program has been pivotal in providing essential medical care to children across various communities. This year, the program achieved significant milestones:

·         231 children with disease underwent surgery.

·         72 benefited from therapeutic Catheterizations.

·         12 disabled children received wheelchairs

·         Medicines were purchased to 366 children.

·         41 children received hearing aids and treatment.

·         The International Medical Team conducted several significant activities, including spinal surgeries by Dr. Kardo Salahaddin, and burns support.

·         Several children were selected for surgery by the Swiss Cross Medical Team.

·         Heart disease treatment was provided by the Kafeel Medical Team.

·         Medical equipment and supplies were donated to hospitals.

·         Various facilities were renovated, including the Helena Center and the Thalassemia Center.

·         Renovating the Thalassemia Center and providing 40 Infusion pumps in Slemani city.

·         Providing 15 incubators, 40 Infusion pumps for Raparin Hospital in Erbil, 1 Cpap, and 5 Inhalers for Soran district in Erbil.

ARA Project

Launched in 2013, the ARA Project offers crucial support to children with cancer. This year’s achievements include psychological and social support for 821 children with cancer, 236 children with hemophilia and other diseases, and 260 children celebrating birthdays.

Financial assistance and case management were provided to 27 children, and 607 children received gifts. The project also referred 20 children for treatment and surgery, supported 407 children through artistic activities, and provided significant financial support for treatment in various centers, including 5,000,000 Iraqi Dinars (USD$3,333) to Zhin Center and 12,128,450 Iraqi Dinars (USD$8,086) to Hiwa Hospital.

Youth Ability Development Program

KSC’s Youth Ability Development Program empowers young people to become active members of their communities. This year’s activities included operating Youth Activity Centers in Darbandikhan (403 beneficiaries), Kalar (355), Koya (389), Khanaqin (462), and Shorsh (368).

Notable campaigns included the “Yes to Life, No to Drugs” campaign with 506 participants, the “We Protect Our Families online safety awareness campaign” awareness campaign with 409 participants, and the PDO Rights and Reproductive Health Campaign with 90 participants. The program also conducted Media Lab project in cooperation with Lens on Life organization for 16 beneficiaries, photography course for 8 staff, and a joint project with Triangle Génération Humanitaire (TGH) involving 1,795 participants.

ERBIL: KSC helps nearly 400 refugee children access physiotherapy in 2023

As sole provider of physiotherapy services in the camps of Kurdistan Region, KSC empowers refugee children by improving access to essential care.

Since the launch of its physiotherapy services in 2023, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) is addressing a critical healthcare gap for refugee children.

The program was initiated following a survey involving 260 refugee families, to assess the accessibility and quality of physiotherapy services in government hospitals.

Initially, many children suffering from musculoskeletal issues faced neglect, partly because their families were unaware of the benefits of physiotherapy but also due to significant challenges in accessing public hospitals (especially those located 30-60 kilometers from the refugee camps).

“Children from areas of conflict have higher rates of musculoskeletal problems developed from injuries or missing out on early treatment because of broken infrastructures,” says KSC President Sara Rashid. “Then when they move to ‘temporary shelters’ such as refugee camps, only a very basic infrastructure is supported, so often these children continue to miss out on their comprehensive needs being met.”

In partnership with the Health Department, KSC undertook the renovation of the Helena Center for Children with Special Aid, addressed maintenance needs and upgraded equipment and facilities.

As the sole provider of physiotherapy services in camps across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), KSC proudly shoulders the responsibility of bridging the gap and improving access to essential care.

Moving forward, plans are underway to assign one or two physiotherapists to the center, facilitating direct treatment sessions and enhancing the connection between refugee patients and public healthcare services. This initiative is a key component of KSC’s handover plan with the government.

2023 Achievements

In 2023, KSC provided physiotherapy services to 381 children residing in camps and urban areas, utilizing both on-site facilities and mobile teams to reach those in remote locations. This effort was crucial in addressing the immediate needs of these children and laying the groundwork for continued support.

2024 Achievements 

From January to August 2024, KSC’s dedicated physiotherapy team has continued to make significant strides, managing 203 new cases across 125 refugee camps and 78 urban areas. This includes addressing cases from last year's waiting list and new referrals from various departments and external organizations.

Case closures reflect diverse outcomes:

1. Complete Recovery: Many cases have concluded with the child's full recovery, particularly those involving fractures, Erb’s Palsy, Torticollis, Bedwetting, and Flat Foot.

2. Caregiver Training: For chronic conditions like Cerebral Palsy, we focus on training caregivers to perform necessary exercises, ensuring long-term care even after our direct intervention concludes.

3. Family Engagement: In cases where families are initially unresponsive, we collaborate with case management teams to encourage participation and improve outcomes.

By redirecting some of our cases to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) that require specialized equipment, such as wheelchairs or orthoses, we have collaborated closely with them. Their swift and effective response has been instrumental in providing the necessary support to our patients. New Initiatives

1. WhatsApp Community: In September 2024, we launched a WhatsApp community to streamline communication with families of disabled children served in 2023 and 2024. This platform will provide updates on public center services, including those at Helena Center.

2. Coordination with Private Providers: We are also working to engage private physiotherapy providers to offer free services for one or two refugee cases periodically. This initiative aims to expand access and support for our refugee patients.

KSC welcomes the opening of a new Department of Educational and Psychological Counselling within the College of Education at University of Slemani. 

Addressing a growing need for trained professionals in educational and psychological guidance, the Department of Educational and Psychological Counselling is set to provide a comprehensive education in Psychology, Education, Psychiatry, Sociology, and Biology. The new department will contribute to a much-needed specialized workforce in this field.

To celebrate this milestone, KSC co-sponsored an international symposium titled "Important Role of Educational and Psychological Counseling in Society and Labor Market" at the University of Slemani on September 2, 2024. The event was also supported by WHO and Kurdsat Broadcasting Cooperation (KSC).

Dean of the College of Education Dr. Hanaw Hassan Muhammad Khan noted that the new department will bolster the Kurdish region’s efforts to build capacity in this critical field and help young people navigate life's challenges effectively.

The symposium featured two panel discussions:

1. The crucial role of counseling in supporting mental health across education, labor, employment and humanitarian sectors. Moderated by Assistant Professor Dr Khatab Ahmad, the panel included Kowestan Mohammed, Minister of Social Affairs and Burhan Abdullah, Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Education.

2. The importance of educational and psychological counselling in education and social affairs. Panelists included Shler Sardar Ramzi, KSC’s Program Director, Sherry Kraham Talabani, President and Director of Seed Foundation, and Dr. George Alfred, WHO Representative and Head of Mission. This discussion was moderated by Assistant Professor Dr Saman Anwar.

The symposium highlighted KSC’s leading role in addressing gaps in support services. Shler Sardar Ramzi, KSC’s Program Director, noted the importance of psychological counselors in identifying and advocating for the root causes of problems faced by individuals, with specific mention of projects like the psychosocial support initiative at Hiwa Hospital for children with cancer and their families.

According to Saman Kareem, KSC psychologist, having psychological counseling available in the community can offer numerous benefits, particularly for adolescents who are in a crucial stage of self-discovery and identity formation.

“Psychological counseling can provide essential support as teenagers navigate these formative years, helping them develop a stronger sense of self and better coping strategies,” he said. “For high schoolers, this period is pivotal in shaping a student's future and academic success. Psychological counseling can address common issues such as anxiety, fatigue, and fear, supporting students in managing stress and improving their overall well-being. Psychological counselors can also support family dynamics by facilitating an understanding among family members and work towards resolving conflicts.”

ERBIL: KSC Completes Renovation of Helena Physiotherapy Center

Helena Center now better equipped to meet annual target of serving 26,256 children in need of care.

As part of ongoing efforts to improve health services for children, Kurdistan Save the Children Organization (KSC) has successfully renovated the Helena Physiotherapy Center in Erbil. Completed on August 21, 2024, the renovation aims to enhance the quality of physiotherapy training and supply essential resources for the center.

Founded in 1995 by Swedish philanthropist Ms. Helena, the Helena Physiotherapy Center has been a cornerstone in providing vital physiotherapy services to children. The center serves approximately 180 citizens daily and addresses a wide range of needs, including bone and fracture care, child development, neurological consultation, and physiotherapy.

The renovation focused on two key areas:

1. Building Renovation: Improvements include plastering, installation of rubber flooring, roofing repairs, door repairs, and the installation of waterproofing. Comprehensive electrical repairs and enhanced lighting were also provided to ensure a safe and functional environment.

2. Supplies and Training: New supplies include intellectual games and specialized training resources for children aimed at further enriching their therapeutic experience.

Dr. Hazheen Tal’at, Director of Helena Center, expressed his gratitude for the support, saying: “This center is unique in that it does not charge patients, which leaves it without income and struggling to meet its needs. The renovation and support from KSC have been instrumental in helping us provide high-quality services. Thanks to their efforts, we can now offer better facilities and resources to children in need of physiotherapy and rehabilitation.”

36 children undergo vital catheterizations as KSC partners with leading hospitals to address  congenital heart disease.

In a major stride toward addressing congenital heart disease among children in Iraq, Kurdistan Save the  Children (KSC) is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking collaborative project with Anwar Sheikha Hospital, Kafeel and Ibn Al-Bitar Hospitals in Karbala and Baghdad.  

The initiative aims to provide critical cardiac care and therapeutic interventions for children in the region. Since  May 2023, the collaborative team has been visiting Slemani monthly, making substantial progress in the  treatment of congenital heart disease. Over 170 children have received life-saving catheterizations, and more  than 10 children have undergone vital surgeries.  

The focus of the most recent visit, scheduled from August 12 to August 16, 2024, is a major undertaking  involving 36 catheterizations for children benefiting from KSC’s support, three diagnostic catheterizations, and  33 treatment catheterizations. The visit commenced at Anwar Sheikha Hospital, where the team has been  working from morning till evening. 

In addition to the catheterizations, the project is addressing the needs of 45 patients from KSC, including 36  catheterizations, three diagnostic catheterizations, and 33 therapeutic catheterizations, and 10 children  were selected for heart surgeries scheduled for end of September. The effort reflects a significant  extension of the ongoing partnership with Anwar Sheikha Hospital. If a patient’s condition exceeds the  capabilities of the visiting team or the local facilities, they will be officially referred to Baghdad or sent  abroad for further treatment at no cost to the patient. KSC ensures that every child receives the necessary  care, regardless of the complexity of their condition.

STATEMENT

KSC Statement on Proposed Amendments to Iraqi Personal Status Law no. 188 of 1959

Slemani, Iraq – August 13, 2024: Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) is alarmed by recent proposals to amend the Iraqi Personal Status Law no. 188 of 1959. The proposed amendments would threaten the significant advances made by women and children in Iraq over many decades.

While proponents of these changes are advocating for the right to follow religious laws instead of the laws enshrined in Iraq’s constitution, there is ambiguity over what these religious laws would prohibit or condone. The religious codes, whether Sunni or Shia, have not yet been drafted or submitted to the judicial council for review and approval. It is worth noting, for instance, that some religious schools would set the legal age of marriage at nine for girls and 15 for boys – down from the current law which does not permit marriage before 18 years of age.

KSC’s legal team warns that there is a risk these amendments could be detrimental to the rights of women and children, with direct impact on marriage, polygamy, divorce, legal guardianship of children and inheritance.

KSC urges parliamentarians to remember that Iraq is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Right of the Child. The proposed amendments egregiously contravene the basic principles of this Convention which call upon signatories to “act in the best interest of the child” who should “never be subjected to any discrimination”, and guarantees the “right to survival and development”.

Most alarmingly, the proposed changes would lead to a dramatic increase in temporary marriages (permitted in some religious sects) and underage marriages of children arbitrarily deemed by clergymen to be of “mature age”.

“It would effectively eliminate the minimum age for marriage, as well as give potential to bypassing the process of notarizing a consensual marriage by the Iraqi courts, and remove accountability if a marriage isn’t legally notarized, not to mention the documentation issues this could bring about,” says Miran Ali, a member of KSC’s Legal Team.

KSC views such a development as posing a serious setback to Iraqi society as a whole, in particular to the rights of Iraqi girls. These risks include:

1.    Physical and psychological health complications resulting from early pregnancy.

2.    Decreased educational opportunities for Iraq’s women as young brides routinely drop out of school.

1.    Exposure to domestic physical and sexual violence often prevalent in child marriage cases.

2.    Adverse impact on economic stability and empowerment as children lack skills and education for meaningful employment.

“Freedom of choice should not come at a detriment to society as a whole. These proposed changes would give significant power to clergymen over the state, and the application of different religious codes will surely lead to further segregation of communities and less respect for Iraqi laws which have been commended over the years as the most advanced in the region,” says KSC President Sara Rashid. “We call on parliament to reject any measures that would turn the clock back on Iraq’s women.”

In a significant stride towards addressing longstanding water issues in Shorsh District, Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) has successfully completed a crucial project that has restored access to clean water for nearly 600 families.

Directly addressing the scorching summer heat and deadly effects of climate change, the KSC initiative focused on repairing the Shorsh Water Department equipment, directly benefiting residents of the Qadir Karam and Qarahanjir neighborhoods. Many homes in these areas rely on tanker deliveries due to inadequate water network infrastructure. The KSC project provides a necessary boost to local services, addressing the water shortage that has plagued these communities for years.

The Shorsh Water Department had been unable to resolve these issues due to budget constraints, limited funding and the overall financial situation of the Kurdistan Regional Government. These factors prevented a comprehensive solution to the water supply problems.

Kurdistan Save the Children’s intervention, led by Iraq’s First Lady and KSC co-founder Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmad, has provided crucial support. By focusing on repairing key equipment rather than overhauling the entire network, KSC has made a tangible difference in the daily lives of many families, ensuring they receive water in a more efficient manner.

Hiwa Salah Karim, Head of the Shorsh Water Department, expressed his gratitude for KSC’s support: "The implementation of this project has been a turning point for many citizens in Shorsh District. For years, especially in the Qadir Karam and Qarahanjir neighborhoods, residents have faced severe shortages of drinking water. We are deeply thankful to Kurdistan Save the Children for their generous funding and commitment to improving the lives of our community members."

Initiative aims to engage families and communities to safeguard refugee children who are at high risk.

Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) has launched a series of child protection training sessions across several locations in the Kurdistan Region. The training is part of a joint initiative for “Child Protection in Coordination with UNHCR project”. Sessions were held in Kurgosk, Dara Shakran, Qushtapa, and Basrma camps, as well as Kesnazan, Daratu, and Bahrka centers in Erbil.

Hundreds of thousands of children in Iraq, including refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced children, are in dire need of protection from violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect. Moreover, exposure to violence and displacement adversely impacts a child’s psychosocial well-being.

Designed for teachers and government employees, the KSC-UNHCR training sessions focused on critical aspects of child protection, including support for exploited children, the establishment of volunteer committees, and the enhancement of child protection services. This initiative aims to engage families and communities in safeguarding refugee and asylum-seeking children, who are especially vulnerable.

Some 80 educators and officials will benefit from the training sessions but the long-term impact of such joint projects is contingent upon longer term commitments by partners.

As KSC President Sara Rashid puts it: “Although the impact of these types of projects aim to be long term, the reality is we often need to be on the ground much longer than anticipated to ensure the community can take the lead in protecting their own children without our help in the future. So, our concerns are the sustainability of such programming when our international partners have their exit strategies in place, we worry about the longevity of the impact without partners’ support.”

The objectives of the training sessions:

Support for Exploited Children: Providing educators and officials with tools and strategies to support and protect children who are vulnerable to exploitation.

Volunteer Committee Formation: Establishing volunteer committees to enhance local efforts.

Enhanced Child Protection Services: Improving existing services to better safeguard children in the region.

The “Child Protection in Coordination with UNHCR project " is part of KSC’s efforts to offer psychological, social, and physiotherapy support to refugee children and their families.

Eye examinations were performed on 110 children in the Qushtapa Refugee Camp on 22 May 2024, as part of a collaborative effort between Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC), UNHCR, and the Erbil General Directorate of Health. The examinations were conducted by West Eye Hospital staff.

Over the past year, this initiative has made a substantial impact on the quality of life of refugee children in Qushtapa Camp by addressing their eye care needs. The collaborative efforts of KSC and West Eye Hospital have not only provided immediate relief but also set a foundation for ongoing support and care. Vision impairment due to uncorrected refractive error, cataracts, or corneal opacities has been reported as a significant issue for refugees. Lack of access to ophthalmological care can aggravate even the simplest conditions. Children in particular are at risk as they can lose their motivation to learn and perform poorly in school due to eye problems, which erodes their ability to flourish.

“We are committed to continuing this important work and expanding our services to reach all communities, ensuring that every child has access to the eye care they need,” said Sara Rashid, KSC President.

“We also try to raise awareness among children and parents over the harmful effects stemming from the misuse of devices with screens as the use of technology becomes prevalent in every community, including camps.”

One of KSC’s Child Protection projects – in close collaboration with UNHCR – aims to deliver specialized child protection services and support to refugee and asylum-seeker children through its case management component in camp and non-camp settings, and by enhancing community-based protection, psychosocial support, and physiotherapy.

“The project aims at engaging community members as community engagement is a crucial component for the success and sustainability of child protection and protection-related initiatives,” said Rashid.

Located 23 kilometers south of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Qushtapa Camp shelters close to 1,940 refugee families who have fled the war in Syria. Most of the refugees in Qushtapa come from Qamishli, Deralok, and Hassaka in Syria.

Established on August 19, 2013, the camp's infrastructure and services are designed to support the residents, covering sectors like protection, food, education, health, and shelter.

On International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, KSC reaffirms its commitment to raise awareness about the imminent dangers to society presented by the growing drug trade.

At the forefront of the national drive to dissuade youths from succumbing to substance addiction, KSC is also lobbying the government to broaden its approach and move beyond punitive methods and incarceration.

As KSC President Sara Rashid puts it, “Incarcerating drug users is often the most common reprimand in Iraq and Kurdistan, but we need to focus on establishing rehabilitation programs if we want to be successful in reintegrating drug addicts.”

She adds: “Aside from advocacy and awareness. KSC is exploring options for bringing specialized drug rehabilitation services to the region.”

Drug addiction remains one of the greatest challenges facing youth across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Reliable statistics are hard to come by, largely due to stigma and fear of legal penalties. In the Kurdistan Region, more than 400 drug traffickers were arrested in the last six months alone.

The government is taking measures to curb the trade but grassroots awareness campaigns are vital.

On 9 March, 2024. KSC launched its “Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs” campaign with a marathon on Salim Street in the city of Slemani. The marathon drew the participation of over 500 runners, including Iraq’s First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed. The campaign has registered a wide reach through social media networks and television reports, as well as infomercials. KSC has also held panel discussions and seminars to reach as many young people as possible.

But raising awareness is only half the battle, and KSC is pushing hard for legislative amendments as well.

“We need to update the region’s legal framework to account for the current narcotics climate,” says KSC President Sara Rashid. “As we become more and more globalized, changed societal values and restricted accessibility no longer become a deterrent to drug abuse.”

Seven hundred and fifty children have benefited from the sponsorship project during March and April, the project launched by Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) to support vulnerable families.

From May 6-13, a total of 106,661,250 IQD – roughly $75,000 – was distributed across Slemani, Erbil, Kirkuk, Duhok, Halabja, Garmian Administration, and Raparin Administration.

Essential for sustenance and education, the aid serves as a beacon of hope in their lives.

"Sometimes children just need to be given a chance to finish their education. The impact of this project can be measured by the future outcomes of these children; we have children who were sponsored in the 1990s who have grown up to be doctors and professionals, financially stable and providing for their children,” says Sara Rashid, KSC President.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to our donors whose unwavering support has made this assistance possible, reaffirming our commitment to the well-being and empowerment of every child in our community.”

In tandem with this vital aid distribution, KSC seized the opportunity to conduct an insightful seminar for 193 caregivers on “Ways to Prepare Children for Exams and Keep Them Safe from Seasonal Flu”. Held across multiple cities including Slemani, Chamchamal, Kalar, Koya, Halabja, Qaladze, Kirkuk, Duhok, and Erbil, the seminar aimed to teach caregivers how to safeguard and nurture the children under their care.

Since its inception in 1991, KSC's sponsorship project has been a cornerstone in supporting children from families with limited means. Through the generous contributions of international and local sponsors, this initiative ensures that children can pursue their education without the burden of financial constraints, thus empowering them to realize their full potential.

“Although times have changed, it’s unfortunate that there is still a need for this project to continue. Many children lost parents in the ISIS conflict, children have also lost parents to illness, tragic accidents, and other complicated situations,” says Sara Rashid. “Some parents don’t have the physical or mental capacity to work and provide for their children, especially during a national budget crisis. Governmental social benefits are scarce which means we have to rely on donors and sponsors to give children a chance to finish their education.”

In an exclusive interview published in the Iraqi International News Agency (IINA), Kurdistan Save the Children President Sara Rashid outlined some of the major challenges in delivering vital support and assistance to the most vulnerable segments of the population in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

“It takes time for all the infrastructures to be at a quality level and efficient level, including education systems, healthcare systems, as well as protective services or frameworks for children and families,” she told IINA editor Elika Bozorgi. “Children here face risks of being exploited for child labour, violent extremism, or early/ forced marriage. Youths here face risks of emigrating, substance abuse/ addictions, as well as mass unemployment which lead to feelings of hopelessness or worse, civil unrest.”

Matters are complicated by relatively new resources in the country, which can bring about some benefits as well as present new challenges, she added.

“They have internet, they have TV, they know what’s happening everywhere else in the world. They don’t want to feel left out,” said Rashid. “That’s why we need to focus on bettering their future by providing specialized skills and services. We try and have new initiatives to keep youths and children engaged. That’s why something like STEM education or coding for kids, these things are important for us to keep updated.”

Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC), in cooperation with Latter-day Saint Charities (LDSC), is providing 40 portable syringe pumps to the Erbil Thalassemia Center to care for patients with acute thalassemia needing reduced iron injections. Currently, 40 children are benefiting from these devices. Additionally, KSC staff donated much-needed blood for thalassemia patients in Erbil on International Thalassemia Day on 8 May 2024.

Patients with thalassemia, an inherited genetic disorder, require regular blood transfusions to maintain normal growth and suppress ineffective erythropoiesis, a condition that destroys developing erythroid cells in the marrow, leading to anemia and abnormal iron metabolism. According to the Kurdistan Thalassemia Association, there are 1,100 thalassemia patients in Erbil, 1,375 in Slemani, and 1,600 in Duhok. Additionally, 30 new cases are registered annually, with an unfortunate 3-5 patient deaths occurring each year. A 2023 study found there were 13,390 registered cases of thalassemia in Iraq, with 66 percent of cases under 15 years of age.

This service was provided to the Erbil Thalassemia Center, where nearly 500 children are receiving treatment.

KSC joins other non-governmental organizations in addressing shortfalls in treatment options for thalassemia patients in Iraq. Most patients come from low-income families and do not have the financial means to travel abroad for treatment. Compounding this problem, the financial crisis in Kurdistan limits government assistance to meet hospitals' urgent requirements for medical supplies.

This joint project with LDSC aims to provide support to local hospitals and medical centers, reflecting KSC’s commitment to improving the health sector throughout the Kurdistan Region, especially for children.

KSC was founded by former First Lady of Iraq Hero Ibrahim Ahmad in 1991.
