      Child Labour Protection and Monitoring

Economic hardship accurates a toll on millions of families worldwide, which is the main reason for child labour, this phenomenon includes working children under the age of 15, and it is obvious that this age is not compatible with physical and intellectual ability.

The extent of this phenomenon and its characteristics in the Kurdistan Region was not determined by any specific organization or party To this end، KSC created a special project for Child labour, which is a major and important issue in the child protection program. KSC in 2007 conducted a survey in the three governorates of Slemani, Erbil, and Duhok, to determine the percentage of Child labour in all three governorates as a result, Nearly 50% of children under the age of 15 are being exploited by their guardians to work for different reasons. After three years the program did another survey in 2010 to identify the project’s impact, the results showed that the project had a huge role in reducing child labor in Slemani, Erbil, and Duhok.

      The project consists of:

1 - Identifying working children and evaluating their condition.

2- Financial support with cash for children’s families whose living conditions are poor after assessing their condition.

3 - Conducting Awareness campaigns at the level of family and community about the adverse effects of child labour at a very young age، as well as about difficult and dangerous work.

4 – Supporting the directorate of labour and Social Affairs to identify any kind of violation towards children who work in companies, factories and other places to protect them from hard and dangerous work.

This project was approved by the attendees and the Slemani Center District for the observation of children who are exploited to work by their families under the age of 15, with the name of the (Child Protection and Observation) committee.

Notably this project continuously operates in the Slemani city in coordination with the Slemani Center District, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Police administrative and Juvenile police department. In 2021 KSC operated the same project in Erbil and Duhok governorates in coordination with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Police and Juvenile police department in Erbil and Duhok city.

Another part of this project is providing legal assistance for those children who have legal issues, which includes the provision of agency, consultant and bail.
